The School of Agriculture opened on October 18, 1888, on the University Farm in St. Paul, with 17 students registered for the fall term. Ralph E. Miller was born in Independence, Iowa on February 17, 1908. He earned his B.A. in agriculture in 1931 and M.S. in rural sociology in 1934 from Iowa State University. Miller joined the faculty at the University of Minnesota in 1934 as a part-time rural sociology instructor in the school of agriculture.
